The Doris M. Highsmith First Call for Help & Information has gone through a recent change. Residents in Jefferson County are now able to dial 2-1-1 instead of the local exchange (563-9555) to receive helpful information and referral. 2-1-1 is an anonymous, toll-free helpline that provides an immediate and critical connection to individuals and families in need.
2-1-1 is the three digit dialing code designated in 2000 by the Federal Communications Commission to provide widespread public access to community information and referral services. In response, there has been a national effort to develop statewide “2-1-1 systems” that will ensure that 2-1-1 becomes as easily recognized as 911 and 411.
Following her death in 1988, the Doris M. Highsmith Memorial Fund was established within the Fort Atkinson Community Foundation by the Highsmith family. In 1994, a partnership was established with the United Way of Jefferson & North Walworth Counties to assist in managing this help and referral service. The Highsmith Family Foundation will continue to support this valuable service and are pleased that it will now be available 24 hours a day/7 days a week/365 days a year by dialing 2-1-1.
